All across the Midwest, as far as I can tell,  every place in the country is saturated with a synthetic Southern culture. It's synthetic because the love of the land has been replaced with the love of the official legend of the land. The United States of Amnesia has been reprogrammed with new Truths regardless of old facts. Now it remembers whatever it is supposed to know, regardless of whatever it already knew, for however long it needs.
