What is it? Well, gas and dust, surely, but I mean the cause of the formation.
That's a really good question.
Obviously something in that gas cloud is being expelled out with enough force- constantly- to keep it at an equidistance from the source.
This is really an unusual structure.
I've posted a link to the NASA explanation, but I personally think it's one of those spacial phenomena that makes NASA and the Christianists want to get rid of space science completely. Especially since it's observation in that spot, by several observers, is a recent event.
Gotta love that multiverse. Always full of surprises.
